Contra (PlayChoice-10) was produced by Konami in 1988. You and an optional second player are commando-type characters in a scrolling shoot-em-up. At the end of each scene or world, there is a difficult bad guy to finish off. At various points there are stationary skill-type screens to get by. The Japanese version of this game had a totally different storyline to it that made more sense for the game's sequels to come. The game took place in the year 2633, two years later after New Zealand reported a meteor crash in the Pacific Ocean. The Red Falcon is formed, and their goal, as unoriginal as it gets,is to destroy mankind. The heroes were named Bill and Lance, a Schwartzenegger and Rambo look-alike soldier duo that the Earth is relying on to stop them. Also, the Japanese version had a game map that you could see between stages and cool cut scenes with Lance talking on a walkie-talkie and shooting his gun. Oddly, the game's credits are in English!
