Let’s talk about old-school games—NES, SNES, Sega—why were they so hard? Simple: game designers back then were sadists. They came straight from the arcade, where games were designed to steal your quarters. At home, they just said, ‘Give ’em three lives and a dream.’ And when you died? ‘Oh, too bad. Start over. Maybe cry a little.’

But it wasn’t just cruelty. These games were like 12 levels long. That’s it! So, they cranked the difficulty to psychological torture to make you replay Level 1 for months. And the controls? They worked sometimes. Jumping felt like flipping a coin. Miss the platform? ‘GAME OVER.’

And yet, we loved it. Why? Stockholm Syndrome, maybe. These games didn’t coddle you with tutorials or checkpoints. They built character. Or at least that’s what we tell ourselves as we rage quit Battletoads for the 400th time.
