Coots, Ducks, Geese & Gulls – Relaxing Birdwatching by the Water
It was a lively, yet relaxing Saturday morning at the watering hole, bustling with bird activity. The swans were absent, but their absence was more than made up for by a mix of Canadian geese, the resident coot pair who fiercely guard their section of the canal, an unusually large gathering of mallard ducks—likely due to ice-covered waters elsewhere—and a flock of gulls, which I believe are black-headed gulls.
The coots stole the show with their feisty antics, while the Canadian geese lounged peacefully alongside the gulls. Meanwhile, the mallards filled the air with their endless quacking!
With the cold weather setting in, the birds are especially grateful for extra food, and it’s heartwarming to see them gather. Spotting the Canadian geese was a treat, but the familiar sight of the coots and mallards never gets old!
Birds in this relaxing video:
🦆 Coots – Dark, duck-like water birds with white beaks and lobed toes, often seen diving and paddling in lakes and ponds.
🦆 Mallard Ducks – The most common wild ducks, with males sporting glossy green heads and females in mottled brown plumage.
🪿 Canadian Geese – Large, long-necked waterfowl known for their honking calls and strong migratory instincts, often seen grazing near water.
🕊 Gulls – Medium to large seabirds with white and gray plumage, sharp beaks, and a scavenging nature, commonly found near coasts and lakes.
