Yo, Youtube I’m Anarchious, 1 half of Afronomenon studio and I am here with a teachable moment! So this was posted on twitter.

“SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP!”

Im sure most artists have heard the ladder often. However, it was this that caught my eye.

“Hey Your OC reminds me of [insert Character]”
“Well yeah that character was one of my inspiration.”

This is a pro response. Couldn’t have said it better myself. Thats being said, question.

What if that wasn’t true?

For example. From the Day I created my main OC. i’ve been hearing how he reminds people of static shock. Looking at him and knowing his power-set might give you those vibes and most time i just go with it but you would be incredibly wrong.

Anarchious came from my love and hip-hop, a cherished memory of storm watchin with my biological mother and Gohan from dragon ball Z. Just base his powers on that eviction during a summer storm, make Ssj2 Gohan Black, and a fan of Wu-Tang and DMX.

Static was never thought of. Not once. Not ever subconsciously.

What about Abel he is definitely inspired by Ebon. Right?! Right!!!!????

Nope. I can see why are you say that with his skin being pitch black and him seemingly having shadow powers.

Abel comes directly from me being roasted every day in elementary and middle school. They said I look like the basement at midnight. It got to a point I was fighting a lot and it took for my guidance counselor to tell me that my melanin is what makes up the universe. That my melanin absorbs energy like Black Matter and Black holes. That black is the most powerful and beautiful.

My literal first thought was, I am making a character, whose so black he’s powered by it. No, let me come clean. My first thought was let’s make a character who can’t be hurt by a Kamehameha wave. After I was over that, colorism fueled Abels continued development.

I had forgotten Ebon by that point. While I did watch static it Wasn’t religiously like with Dragonball. Even so, I made it a point to make sure my characters all represented something or someone. For example.

Eva, my character just the other day someone pointed out she looks like Poison Ivy. Her color scheme and powers came from the black Sorority the AKAs. If you know anything about the bag test, you might be able to guess what she represents.

Poison Ivy was never thought of. So sometimes this response, that might be good, isn’t true. Most of my characters come from pop black culture or some interest i had in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.

So your original character might flat out, resemble something or someone and that something or someone was never on your mind while creating it to begin with. To keep from yelling again sometimes I go with it. However, for most of my characters, it’s not true. Except Jose, he is definitely sexy latin Obi-Wan Kenobi.
