Couple opens dream barbershop in the heart of Miami Beach
"Seeing the change in a person, from how they looked coming in to when they leave, makes me feel good," says Jorge Fraga, owner of Untouchable Barbershop. "That’s what made me stick to this field."
In 2019, Jorge and his wife, Elizabeth Duprey, decided to open their own barbershop. But their plans were put on hold when the pandemic hit in 2020. After all the restrictions were lifted, it took several months for the couple to finally open their small business. "We were able to open as of August 2022,’ says Elizabeth. "We’ve been open for a year."
While Jorge focuses on the craft of cutting hair, Elizabeth focuses on the other half of the business like administration, paperwork, and greeting customers. "I want customers to leave here with an experience," says Jorge. "Like 'Wow, that was the best haircut, the best barbershop I’ve been in.’"
Living in Miami Beach, the couple wanted to make sure that their business was protected from any unexpected event. So, they turned to Hiscox Business Insurance. "As you guys can see, there’s a lot of equipment that we have," says Elizabeth. "In the event of flooding or some sort of disaster, we need Hiscox to be able to cover the things that we have in the shop."
Jorge has been a barber for almost 25 years. He started his career back in New Jersey, where he is originally from. "I am not a cubicle guy, going to the nine-to-five office, sitting behind a desk," says Jorge. "I like using my hands and helping people feel good about themselves," he shares.
For Jorge, cutting hair is an art. "Not anybody can grab a machine or a pair of scissors and create something on someone's head," he says. Having customers thank him at the end of the haircut is what keeps him going. "It makes me feel like I accomplished something good," concludes Jorge.
