covering songs is NOT illegal... most of the time :D #ytt101 #rachie

of course this had to be truncated for time and comedic effect but here's the tl;dr:
youtube is considered a safe harbour for uploading stuff so most of the time the onus is on youtube for making sure all copyright holders are happy.
you WILL get copyright claimed/content id'd for covering songs but that's OK!!! that just means the original claimant is getting revenue for songs they wrote and have the IP for.
making covers with the “original instrumental” is safe as long as permission has been given, and these permissions can be found where the instrumental is distributed, or via jasrac/nextone databases
you should follow the terms & conditions outlined to avoid anything serious happening to your channel. if you can't read japanese, that's ok, it's usually along the lines of DO NOT MONETIZE THIS or DO NOT SELL THIS or DO NOT UPLOAD THIS TO SPOTIFY WITHOUT OUR PERMISSION. if you don't follow those terms, the producer could stop distributing off vocals all together and you won't get your covers.
(i'm looking at you people that upload my content as podcasts on spotify. you're fucking it up for ME and my FRIENDS. please stop.)
