Craft shop radiates color into Upper West Side corner
2On the corner of West 94th and Amsterdam sits a colorful craft store that illuminates the block. Little Shop of Crafts has brightened its Upper West Side community for over a decade.
"I want it to be like a sanctuary in Manhattan. Everyone is going through craziness in their lives, so once you walk in, I want you to feel at peace, creative, and just come and have fun, " said store Manager Joy Burgos.
The shop offers pottery and plaster-craft painting, canvas painting, glass mosaic making, and a create-your-own cuddly where you stuff a plushie and design a shirt for them. Plus, they have fine art classes for children and adults, soapmaking classes, and a business course where you can learn to not only make items like lotions and candles but also sell them to start your own small business.
"I'm always surprised at the finished product, especially from the kids," said Cae Byng, who has taught soapmaking classes at the shop for about 5 years.
Little Shop of Crafts truly caters to all ages, and it doesn't matter what artistic ability you have or lack thereof! Anyone can find a craft that fits them and spark some creative inspiration with little guidance from their employees.
"My favorite thing about working here every day is walking into a space that's fun and working with the people that I get to work with.," said Burgos.
One thing that is different about Little Shop of Crafts compared to other craft studios is there is no additional sitting fee on top of the craft you're paying for. So customers can take their time and are free to use as many materials and colors as they need.
"We don't want to rush your creativity," said Burgos.
Little Shop of Crafts is open 7 days a week, 11am - 7pm, and walk-ins are welcome anytime!
