This is a speed run of Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back for the PlayStation, completed in 54 minutes, 23 seconds.

The category of this run is "Any% No Game Over Abuse," which means I simply have to collect all 25 Crystals and defeat Cortex, and am not allowed to abuse the Game Over glitch (in Crash 2, collecting a Crystal and then getting a Game Over in the level saves the Crystal in your inventory, and it will reward you with it after completing any other level; this effectively lets you cut most levels down by half. The No GO Abuse category of Any% does not permit the use of this exploit).

4 minute improvement from my previous run a few days prior due to less screwups. Shooting for sub 50 next time, and will probably redo my 100% run soon, as I am not satisfied with it at all.

Quick run down of a couple of the main techniques:
*Neutral Slide Spin (NSS): By sliding, letting go of the directional input, and then spinning, Crash maintains all of the speed of the slide into a spin. It is approximately 1.8x faster than running normally when done correctly.

*Glitched High Jump: By spinning out of a crouching high jump, you gain more height and distance. More useful in 100% runs, but still comes in handy during an Any%.

*Mask Abuse: Getting triple masks (invincibility) actually slows the NSS down and is therefore undesirable. As such I will at times intentionally hurt myself to lose a mask and get a damage boost. The one exception is in the level "Hangin' Out", where getting triple masks actually saves time because it makes moving on the hanging grates significantly faster.

*PAL Version: Among other things, Crash runs faster and jumps higher in the European (PAL) version than in the North American (NTSC) version, and as a result its the optimal version for speedrunning. I believe Crash 2 is the only game in the original trilogy where the PAL version is the optimal version (Crash 1 uses NTSC-J and Crash 3 uses NTSC-U).

*Fast Disk Speed (FDS): This is actually something I don't use; pretty much, PlayStation 2's have the option of "Fast Disk Speed", which spins PS1 disks at faster speed, significantly cutting down loading times. I use the pSX emulator and therefore don't have the option to use FDS. Using FDS does shave off several minutes of time so I am at a noticeable disadvantage without it.
