Now for some nes games and for the first one it's Crash n the boys also known as Bikkuri Nekketsu Shin Kiroku! Harukanaru Kin Medal in japan. It's a fun little entry in the kunio kun series. After the downtown nekketsu/river city ransom the franchise shifted it's focus to sports games with a twist to them. My favorite being this one and Downtown Nekketsu Kōshinkyoku: Soreyuke Daiundōkai which never got a US release.

Both downtown nekketsu cross country and crash n the boys had a GB port but the GB ports were japanese exclusive.

Onto crash n the boys, it's a nice little remix to track and field and the olympics only this time there's no rules. In the 400 meter hurdle players literally fight each other by using tornado kicks and the hurdles themselves. Next is hammer throw but with the mix of golf, swimming has the players knocking each other out like in the meter hurdle but this time there's no finish line. The next and hardest one is rooftop jumping which players get to the end by using pole vaults and unicycles to get across buildings. The final one is just fighting where you grapple each other and mash buttons and execute a special move.

Before you start each challenge you have the choice of using items to aid the player in winning be it more health, power or..being able to walk backwards in the roof top jump game which is a bit weird. But to my memory if you use items your overall ranking will decrease and put you on either 2nd or 3rd place. Though if you really have to use an item then use the backwards walking ability in the roof top jump game.

I only have about one gripe in this game and its the hammer throw, the issue her is that you can't see the hazards so it's 50/50 on whether you land on green, bunker or a water hazard but that's about it really. It's a great entry into the kunio kun series.

As for the regional differences, the characters are swapped in crash 'n the boys. In the japanese version it features the students of the 4 high schools in the kunio kun franchise (Nekketsu, Hanazono, Reiho, and horyu).

The plot as well is also altered. Todo needs money for another athletic meet so he begs his father for funds. Here in crash 'n the boys, "Todd Thornley" is about to be disowned by his father for losing to crash 'n the boys too many times so he asks for one more chance and to assure that he wins, Mr. Thornley's assistant hires a bunch of super athletes to crush Crash.

Fun fact though, the name of the game was used as a band name in scott pilgirm. Same goes for the band clash at demonhead which is also based on an nes game.

If you like my runs be sure to check out the group I'm in if you want to see us play more good ol fashion retro games!
