This fire snake experiment went viral, and everyone is now creating their own fire snake at home, following the simple steps you can find in our playlist.
But how does it really work, whatâs the science behind this incredible experiment?
Itâs all about chemistry.
Sugar is a carbon-rich chemical compound with the formula C12H22O11, which can burn and react with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) in a combustion reaction. However, if there isn't enough oxygen present, the sugar decomposes into charcoal instead. When baking soda (NaHCO3) decomposes at high temperatures, it releases a copious amount of CO2, creating a lack of oxygen in the mixture. Some of the sugar then decomposes into elemental carbon, forming a unique black snake-like structure that's pushed upward by the gases produced. As the solid carbon traps the gases, a lightweight foam snake emerges from the sand.
Itâs not black magic! Itâs just chemistry. Use it to surprise your friends!
