I'm not gonna lie, I'm quite a philistine when it comes to deeper meanings. However, I was able to pick up on a few of them (especially after reading the afterward). The Symbol of water is used several times through out the book, to represent being purified. There is also a fair bit of juxtaposition. Dunia, and Raskolnikov's Mother, start living in the city that corrupted Raskolnikov, but yet they are still able to remain pure. Even though Dunia also is tempted to murder, and the Mother starts to see the evils of humanity. Another thing I'm noticing as well, is that Raskolnikov wants to be a Great Rich man. However the first one he meets, Luhzin, he denies extensively. I can't tell if this is irony, or more of a foreshadowing that he can never be one of them. In writing this I do have a better appreciation for the ending. When I first read it, I saw it as another free thinker, beaten down by "The Man" and smiling about it. Now I see it more as a pure sole, was exposed to the real world, and corrupted by it. In going to Prison, he is able to get back to that pure state. Still feels out of nowhere, as the book begins with Raskolnikov, and we are fed very little hints as to what the uncorrupted Raskolnikov was. I think it would have been better if it started by stating, the purity of childhood, then jumping to corrupt Adulthood. Feels less 180 to me.
