My previous ruler didn't expand the realm himself (I think his vassals did) because of defensive pacts and that he died quite young. That was disppointing.

So for the current ruler, when the opportunity came i.e. Novgorod's king left a defensive pact, I seized it. Mind you, previously, I had granted independence to two counties that were far away to reduce threat level by almost 9%. So I guess the previous ruler did something useful.
