Liquid co-CEO Steve Arhancet has confirmed that changes are afoot in the organisation's Counter-Strike team. In a video posted on Twitter, Mr Arhancet addressed the recent reports surrounding the team, saying that "we will be making changes to the roster".
According to a report from DBLTAP, Liquid are looking to add Michael "Grim" Wince to their roster to replace longtime member Nick "nitr0" Cannella, who will step down from the team. In a statement to Rush B Media, the North American giants confirmed that the Triumph rifler will be playing for the team in the upcoming DreamHack Open tournament, which is scheduled to start on August 8.
"Roster changes are never easy," Mr Arhancet said. "They impact the lives of the players and they should be done with a lot of thoughtfulness and consideration and hopefully to improve the performance of the team. Our commitment to winning is pretty much unwavering.
"It's also really important to provide information to all of our fans, the community and the fans of the players about what the changes are and why we're making those changes. But unfortunately, we won't be able to do it right now. We are working on it and it will come soon."
The changes to Liquid's roster come after an extended period of stagnation from the North American team, who cooled off after a dominant period in 2019 that saw them win six Big Events in a row and scoop the Intel Grand Slam Season 2's $1 million prize inside 63 days.
ESL Pro League Season 11 North America was the only title that Liquid won during the first tournament season of 2020. After starting the year at No 3 in the rankings, the team have spent the last two months outside the top 5, even dropping out of the top 10 last month before the third-place finish in cs_summit 6.
nitr0 has been on Liquid's books since January 2015, when the organisation ventured into Counter-Strike with the signing of the former Denial squad. He was the team's in-game leader between September 2017 and May 2020, when he relinquished the role to focus on his game, with Jake "Stewie2K" Yip taking the baton.
In a brief Twitter post on Tuesday evening, nitr0 all but confirmed that he is on his way out of the team, writing: "Until next time, friends."
Grim being comfortable in his spots may be a crucial factor in Liquid making up for a lacklustre start to 2020. The former Triumph rifler has impressed since the start of the year, averaging a 1.31 rating against the likes of Evil Geniuses, MIBR, and 100 Thieves. He is set to debut for Liquid in their DreamHack Open Summer campaign, set to run from August 8-16.
