On the the final 16-Bit/Genesis Shinobi Game, title 'Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master' here in the West (Super Shinobi 2 in Japan), it's features the return of the titular Ninja Badass, Joe Musashi himself, back in his off-White Ninja Ki and w/o the Dog this time. Officially credited as the direct sequel to 1989's 'The Revenge of Shinobi', we see Joe Musashi go up against Neo Zeed once again, and hopefully defeat them for good.

There are many debates on whether this or Revenge of Shinobi is the better 'Shinobi' game...now while I like Shinobi III, I felt like it wasn't as imaginative (as far as enemies, Bosses, Stages, etc) as RoS (except for the Waterfall portion of the 'Traps', Stage 6. Now that was awesome and different!). The Music was good, although Yuzo did set a high bar with the RoS soundtrack that few have yet to match. They did add a Dash to the game, its function was very limited due to the small delay (which gave Musashi some invincibility frames) before he actually attacks. And I also realize that this is probably most people who played Genesis at the time 1st 'Shinobi' experience since this game was released after the now Iconic Sonic The Hedgehog game. So most of them didn't have the past Shinobi titles as a reference point to base Shinobi III on.
Also, I learned that Ninja Gaiden (a rival Ninja Series from Temco) was supposed to come to the Genesis/Mega Drive. But for whatever reason (forgot, gotta go look it up) it never made it to SEGA console because maybe they didn't want another 'Ninja' title to compete with their Flagship Ninja IP. And that's another reason why SEGA and the devs decided to add more 'Ninja Gaiden' like moves to Musashi's arsenal (like the Wall Jump, etc)

Anyway, it's still a cool game with some added elements (like the Rocket Surfboard and HorseBack riding Stages) and a very worthy addition to the Shinobi series. I personally would give it a solid 8, and probably rank it behind RoS and the original arcade Shinobi as the 3rd best in the series.
