Cuphead - How to Beat Phantom Express in Railroad Wrath Walkthrough Strategy Guide
CUPHEAD: PHANTOM EXPRESS STRATEGY GUIDE - REGULAR DIFFICULTY
Recommended loadout: chaser, spread, energy beam, smoke bomb
Throughout this fight, the only place to stand is on a flat rail car that is about a third of the width of the screen. It can be in one of three positions (left, middle or right) and can be moved by parrying one of the crank wheels on either side of it, causing it to move in that direction.
During the first two phases, flying jack-o-lanterns will continually attempt to drop pink bricks onto the crank wheels, which will also trigger the car to move. Parrying the bricks will prevent unwanted car movement (and is a great way to fill up your super meter). You can also destroy the jack-o-lanterns, which causes them to drop their bricks immediately.
PHASE 1
The safest position for this phase is standing next to the right-hand crank wheel; this will allow you to parry falling bricks before they can trigger your platform car to move. (If the platform moves to the center position, parry the left-hand crank wheel as quickly as possible; if the platform moves all the way to the right, it's pretty much a guaranteed hit.) From this position, use a long-range weapon (I recommend the chaser because of its usefulness in Phase 4) to shoot the ghost. When it starts shooting eyeballs from its hands, switch to the spread and jump to quickly destroy them, then switch back to your first weapon. (Keep an eye on the flying jack-o-lanterns so you can time your jumps properly; you might have to parry a brick and shoot eyeballs at the same time!)
PHASE 2
Move the rail car to the center position for the start of this phase; the giant skeleton's head will appear here first, then in random locations for the rest of the phase. The other two spots will be taken up by giant skeleton hands which will slam straight down to damage you. You are safe anywhere on the platform if you are below the head, and on either edge of the platform if you are below the hands.
Depending on where the platform is, shoot straight up or at an angle to damage the head while it is exposed. If you find yourself stuck between the two hands, you can jump and shoot at the head with a long range weapon (or use the chaser). Be careful when jumping to parry bricks; the head can easily hit you as it swings back and forth. Sometimes, the safest option is to adjust your position and let the platform move. (If you're below the head and see that the platform is about to move, scoot to the edge that will remain closest to the head and keep shooting the head at an angle.)
PHASE 3
This phase is relatively easy. Keep your platform on either side; don't stay in the center too long. The two disk-shaped enemies won't damage you if you touch them, so feel free to get up close and personal with your attacks. When they start spewing lightning, press yourself tightly against the side of the screen to remain safe.
The middle section of the train spews out ghosts that follow you like slow homing missiles. When you destroy one of these, it will drop a pink skull that can be parried (and will also trigger platform movement like the bricks in the previous phases). This is a good time to take a small breather and fill up your super meter. (If you have energy beam equipped, fill it up and save it for the next phase.)
PHASE 4
Move the platform to the leftmost position. Parry the pink bulb on the train engine's tail to open its furnace cover. This exposes its heart, which is the weak point you need to shoot. (If you have energy beam and a full super meter, use it immediately after parrying to remove about half of the train's health right away.)
The engine will shoot rings of bones from its nose, which fall down the screen and then straight at you horizontally. These are not hard to avoid, but they're easy to miss if you're focused on other things, so always listen for the distinct "honk" sound that indicates one is coming. When the furnace cover is open, fireballs will rain down on you from within. Because there is so much to dodge in this phase, I recommend using the chaser so you can focus on avoiding damage and don't have to worry about aiming.
