It turns out that all of those curses this thing keeps spewing aren't purely to power its perpetual motion driven engine, but also act as sort of a pseudo defensive barrier that make anyone that gets too close physically ill. Tragically this ends up being a problem, as Aoko's entire plan with her magic circuits out of commission was to get close and melee this thing into submission.
