This level is a well-paced, balanced and aesthetically pleasing romp that seems to lose its momentum after a while. 9.5/10.

*** Info from accompanying readme file ***

New to this version:
- removed the illegal sprite graphics
- combined the two wad files into a single wad
- fixed the offsets of some of the sprites
- the original version was over 4.5MB unzipped, and this version is
less than 1MB !
- this version contains only 2 files: lair2.wad and lair2.txt

Note, no attempt at all has been made to fix the map errors (texture alignment, etc.). However, in an attempt to speed up the gameplay on slower systems (or slower ports like Vavoom), the map was rebuilt using RMB (-perfect) and BSP. If it still runs too slowly for you, try a lower skill setting (skill 4 has twice as many monsters as skill 2).

To use LAIR2.WAD with 'Plain Vanilla' Doom2 you'll first need to add the missing sprites from doom2.wad using a program such as DeuSF, WinTex, NWT, etc. For example: deusf -as lair2.wad

A better method is to use a Doom Source Port which can import pwads containing sprite data, such as: Boom, PRboom, MBF, SMMU, ZDoom, PrjDoom, Vavoom, Legacy, etc.

Patching is not necessary with these ports, just use LAIR2.WAD as-is. For example: boom -file lair2.wad

The original text file follows:

Title : The lair
Filename : lair.zip
Author : Mike Cobb
Email Address : MCobb76715@aol.com
Misc. Author Info : This is a level I worked on over a year ago and I just got around to finishing it to a point where I will upload it.
It is also the first wad I have ever uploaded but I have made several other levels for doom, doom2, heretic, and hexen.
Description : The level is a huge castle with many secret rooms and passages. Deathmatch is not supported because of the size of the level. The story is that you defeated the monsters in the US and now your commanders have sent you to England to help them rid their country of the infestation. While you are on a scouting mission you get cut off from your unit and a trerrible storm is coming. The only refuge from the storm is and old castle you can see off in the distance. When you finally get to the castle it is almost dark.

The files are:
lair.zip-the wad file
lairgfx.zip-the file for the music and suits of armor, tables ect. This file is not needed but makes the level neater. If you play without this some wall textures will not look right and there will be a lot of red pillars in the level.

Additional Credits to : The creators of Deep, NWT, RMB and ID for the game that made all this possible
