160EDIT Aug15: I fixed an erroneous value on Sae's H-bonus. That was some quality observer error (look Rouga has 3 more stam than he ended last turn with!).
So about using short range guys. Dealing with rong range just sucks. You could use your long range and guarantee damage on both sides. You don't want to use mid range because then you're just screwing yourself and unlikely to get an attack off. That leaves short range, who have high evasion against the poor hit of most long range. Short range guys also usually have the most health and counter, so when they are hit, they're have the greatest chance to hit anyways, and they'll be able to take the most blows before you need to take them out of deployment for rest.
Ultimately, you'll probably end up using Rouga for a shit ton of long range guys, then using H-Scenes to heal him.

I kinda wanted to do something like this for Sengoku Rance, but the full translation has been out for nearly a year, so I don't think I'd nab too many people who didn't struggle through it already. I wanted to get this out before the final English patch was out, that was in my unrealistic narcissistic hopes I'll be responsible for teaching hundreds of newcomers to the game.

The most important page on that site is the Character Guide. I seriously spent like a 1:6 ratio of referencing that damn thing on my second playthrough as I did actually playing.
This is quite possibly the most effort I've put into a video that no one will ever watch... I need my ego stroked now...
