1. The image obtained with a convex lens is erect and its length is 4 times the length of the object. If the focal length of the lens is 20 cm, calculate the object and image distances.
Solution. Here,
m = v/u = 4 or v = 4u, f = 20 cm, u = ?, v = ?
As, 1/v - 1/u = 1/f, 1/4u - 1/u = 1/20
(1 - 4)/4u = 1/20
4u = -60 or u = -15 cm
And
u = 4u = 4 (-15) = -60 cm.
2. We wish to obtain an equal sized inverted image of a candle flame on a screen kept at a distance of 4 m from the candle flame.
I. name the type of lens that should be used.
II. What should be the focal length of the lens and to which distance from the candle flame should the lens be placed?
III. Draw a labelled diagram to show the image formation in this case.
Solution.
a. To obtain the inverted image of a candle flame on a screen, we have to use a convex lens.
b. f = ?, u = ?
As image is of same image as the object, therefore v = u
And, v + u = 4 metre
v = u = 4/2 = 2 m
From 1/f = 1/v - 1/u = 1/2 - 1/-2 = 1; f = 1 metre
The lens has to placed at a distance of 2 m from the candle flame
