the protagonist defends a woman from being molested; due to the man's connections, the protagonist is charged with assault and put on probation, resulting in expulsion from his school. On April 9, 20XX, the protagonist arrives in Tokyo to stay with family friend Sojiro Sakura and attend Shujin High School during his year of probation. Just after his arrival, he is drawn into the Velvet Room, where Igor warns him that he must "rehabilitate" to avoid forthcoming ruin, and grants him access to a supernatural mobile app. Soon after the beginning of school term, the protagonist and fellow student Ryuji Sakamoto stumble into the Palace realm and are trapped in the Palace created by Suguru Kamoshida, the school's volleyball coach. During their escape from the Palace's owner, the Shadow self of Kamoshida, the protagonist and Ryuji awaken their Personas and rescue Morgana. After learning from their classmate Ann Takamaki that Kamoshida is trying to force himself on her, the protagonist and Ryuji are persuaded by Morgana to steal Kamoshida's "treasure"—the emotional root of his behavior—from his Palace. During their mission, Ann is kidnapped by Shadow Kamoshida before awakening to her Persona. The group successfully defeats Shadow Kamoshida and steals his treasure, which causes Kamoshida to become reformed and confess to his actions. After a brief encounter with politician Masayoshi Shido, the four decide to become the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, stealing corruption from the hearts of adults in an attempt to reform the city.
