Damsel Movie Review: Is It Worth Watching? | Millie Bobby Brown, Dragons, and Feminism
In this video, I review Damsel, a Netflix fantasy adventure film starring Millie Bobby Brown as a princess who befriends a dragon. I give you my honest opinion on the movie, its story, its characters, its visuals, and its themes. I also include some spoilers, so watch at your own risk.
Damsel is a dark fantasy film directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who is known for his horror thriller 28 Weeks Later. The movie is based on a novel by Dan Mazeau, who also wrote the screenplay. The movie is set in a medieval world where dragons exist and are feared by humans. The movie follows Elodie, a young princess who is forced to marry a prince from another kingdom as part of a secret pact to appease a dragon that threatens their lands. However, things go horribly wrong when Elodie discovers that she is actually a sacrifice for the dragon, and that her new husband and mother-in-law are behind the plot. Elodie manages to escape from the dragon's lair and forms an unlikely bond with the creature, who turns out to be more than what he seems. Together, they embark on a journey to expose the truth and stop the evil queen from unleashing a war.
The movie has some good moments, some bad moments, and some boring moments. It has some fantasy elements that were well done and added to the story. It also has some feminist politics that the movie tried to push. The movie also had a long runtime, which was too long for my taste. The movie ends with a twist that leaves the possibility of a sequel open, but I think that's unlikely, given the mixed reception and ratings of the movie.
The star of the film is Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Elodie. She showed a lot of range and emotion in her role, from being a naive and innocent princess to a brave and fierce warrior. She also had a great chemistry with the dragon, who was voiced by Ralph Fiennes. The dragon, whose name is Aiden, was also a very interesting and complex character. He had a tragic backstory that explained why he was angry and lonely, and how he learned to trust and love Elodie. He also had some funny and cute moments, especially when he tried to act like a dog. The dragon's VFX was very impressive and realistic, and the scenes where he flew with Elodie were breathtaking and magical.
Overall, I would give this movie a 6 out of 10. It's not a terrible movie, but it's not a great movie either. It's a movie that you can watch once and forget about it. If you are a fan of Millie Bobby Brown or dragons, you might enjoy it more than I did. But if you are looking for a more original and engaging fantasy film, you might want to skip this one.
That's it for my review of Damsel. Thank you for watching, and don't forget to like, share, and subscribe to my channel for more movie reviews. See you next time. Bye.
