D&D Players Done GOOFED! GM 911
Original GM 911 Post
Hello Nerarchy.
I besiege you with my calloused quandary from one veteran Dungeoneer to another. I have spent some time creating a sandbox style campaign for my players to take part. This game style puts a heavy empathize on the "Major" plot by either a timed event or by a growing effect in this world. SO, their is little preventing them from doing or exploring the world around them to their own accord, little hand holding outside the occasional "Oh, ya might not want to shake that. It explodes".
And so the issue is a good old fashion "eyes are bigger then their Level". The party heads to the Minotaur kingdom to get the the legendary artifact 'Axe of the Kingslayer', currently in position of the duly elected ruler of the Minotaur.
Originally this would have been a CR 18, I reduced it because there was a sudden drop out of a player. I felt this was fair. Outside of casting Legend lore, the party did no real investigation or research about the labyrinth or the challenges ahead.
In they go and after a bunch of dickery and a surprisingly well fought battle against this hardcore homebrew, they TPK'd... Sort of.
Two of them where a special Golem creature that if its core was not destroyed, would regenerate in x days, the other a war forged that in relatively the same fashion could be reactivated after X time. So unless something REALLY wanted them to stay dead, They would come back. In this case, they would comeback suck inside the Labyrinth with the other people who yielded against the Minotaur king and made home in the 4Cb miles of fertile plains that lay here at the center of the maze.
TL:DR Skip to here: Players dun goofed.
What followed was a bitch fest ranging form the monster being to strong, it was too tricky a dungeon, to the boss shouldn't have been able to use the weapon it owns.
Are these complains well founded? Should I deus ex machina them away? Do they get out the 14-86 years later and deal with the new world or roll up some new characters and continue trying to solve the affliction that is going on now (being that is a wide effecting event, four randoms people wouldn't be the only ones to try and fix it.). should I make the world scale with the players or keep it as it is.
I feel not because ya don't chase a kracken of you cant kill a Kobolt.
