Danger At Dunwater (Dungeons And Dragons, TSR, 1982) | Retro Adventure
Flip through Danger at Dunwater, the 1982 D&D module that's more than just a coastal crawl! Part two of the classic Saltmarsh Trilogy, this adventure offers mystery, misdirection, and some surprisingly diplomatic twists for your party. We take a quick look inside the book, highlight key encounters, and talk about why this classic TSR adventure still holds up today. Perfect for fans of vintage D&D, old-school modules, or anyone curious about the roots of modern roleplaying!
The little fishing town of Saltmarsh is threatened! Why are lizard men gathering force nearby and why have they been buying large quantities of weapons? A party of bold adventurers must answer these questions or the people of Saltmarsh will never live in peace!
"Danger at Dunwater" is the second part in a series of three modules designed and developed in the United Kingdom for beginning adventurers with the AD&D rules. Its plot follows direct from that of the first part (U1: "The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh"). This adventure can be played by 6-10 characters of levels 1-4. This module contains large-scale maps, full background information, and detailed encounter descriptions for the players and DM.
Product History
U2: "Danger at Dunwater" (1982), by Dave J. Browne with development by Don Turnbull, was the second adventure in the "U" series and the third product overall from TSR UK. It appeared in 1982.
Another Thinking Adventure. Like Browne's previous adventure, U1: "The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh" (1981), this one is set up a thinking adventure of a sort pretty uncommon in the early days of D&D. Upon learning the true state of affairs in Dunwater, many parties will negotiate with the lizard men of the adventure rather than fighting them, which is a very different sort of challenge than the typical dungeon crawl, and a fairly unique one even today. Of course, many reviewers have also opined that the disappointing result of this investigative and diplomatic content is that players don't get to explore one of the best designed dungeons of D&D's early days (i.e., the lizard men lair).
The Kuo-Toa Konnection. In some ways, the U-series adventures are structured like the classic GDQ series (1978-1980), where players fight against one race of monsters, then are led on to the next. If so, then U2: "Danger at Dunwater" fills the same role as D2: "Shrine of the Kuo-Toa" (1978), where the main goal is not to fight the monsters (though clever players in D2 avoid the Kuo-Toa, while in U2, diplomacy is required).
About the Creators. Dave J. Browne wrote the first four adventures for TSR UK: U1-U3 and UK1. Don Turnbull is credited with development; he of course had previously written Fiend Folio and was now the head of TSR UK. Graeme Morris, who did cartography, editing, and production for the entire U series would go on to greater fame as the author of the majority of TSR UK's adventures.
