Here's a Mario Forever game that I was actually pretty excited about : The Lost Map 2. The original dates all the way back to Mario Forever 4.0, and it was pretty cool, so I was curious to see how a sequel would turn out to be. I was in for a bit of a surprise, because unlike the original, this one is brutally difficult ! The game itself is well done and you can see they put a lot of effort in making it as appealing as possible, but as for the gameplay....OMG ! Ok, to be honest it's not THAT bad (the graphics are nice and it saves your progress) but what kills it is the length of the levels, combined with the often unfair number of hazards, insufficient checkpoints and culminating with the final Bowser which is still considered part of the last level, so every time you run out of lives fighting him, you have to do the WHOLE LEVEL OVER before you even get another CHANCE to beat him ! That is where I reached my limit. Perhaps I could've beaten him if I restarted from there after using up all my guys (which happened only in a matter of minutes), but after discovering that you indeed go back to the earlier tank level, my brain just gave up. I knew I wouldn't fair any better, no matter how many times I'd play, especially since you risk dying a few times in the regular level and by the time you eventually do make it back, you won't have neither lives nor energy left to fight the bastard, let alone win ! Sometimes there's so much shit on the screen at once and everything just gangs up on you, that there's no place you can stand and have no choice but to take a hit. Maybe I gave up a bit too soon, but again : I have my limits - when I consider it's too much, then it's too fuckin' much ! You must admit that it's not the worst run of mine, since I at least manage to make it up to the last boss, despite not beating it. Not a bad world in terms of presentation, but it got rejected because of the difficulty, the final boss being the biggest issue in that respect. I consider it to be a pretty big oversight, given how difficult the game is overall - at least cut me some slack by putting right back at the final battle ! Danny out.
