Yeah, so this is one of those places where the designers didn't think about how it would go down on hardcore. A single attack from the pau-kai here is deadly, and it's almost impossible to prevent it from hitting you without sanctuary scrolls. So, if you don't have any, and you're playing as an assassin, you're basically fubar. As a warrior you might be able to sustain a single hit, and can survive with a few full health potions.
Don't make the mistake to go immediately to the ballista, as the pau-kai will just fly around in a distance for a while, slowly inching your way, before it reaches you, any sanctuary spell you'll have cast will have run out, very annoying.
Dark Messiah is a semi-progressive 2006 PC game with flashy gameplay and great graphics, but was marred by some repetition, a derivative story line and a limited skill tree.
Though the biggest mistake the game designers made was the placing of traps virtually everywhere enemies are found.
The game features fast paced melee combat, an outstanding musical score and great voice acting and is well worth playing.
