Affected by the "curse", hollowed, and aimlessly wandering, the King appears uninterested in the player (unless he's attacked). The King's Ring is obtained, and the Emerald Herald suggests that the player seek to become Drangleic's next monarch. With ring on hand, the way forward is through the previously-blocked King's doors strewn throughout Drangleic.
