The Rotten seems intimidating at first, but is actually not too difficult once you learn a few of his tells. At SL1, you're going to be dying a lot since at best you're going to be two hits away from death at all times. Fortunately, the hidden bonfire in the Black Gulch is very nearby.
We pick up a fire seed at the end inside the Rotten's boss arena. We'll be collecting a full set of ten of those soon enough.
