This video shows how to make the dragon go away so you can collect the loot safely and get a large titanite for your trouble.

Find or buy a long bow plus about 50 standard arrows. Shoot him till he flys away and you will be rewarded with a large titanite shard. He doesn't come back.

This place is also a great early game souls farm. Shoot him with arrows to aggro him and go back to the bonfire repeat until you have the souls you require. You can buy arrows with the souls. :-)
