Artorias, the Abysswalker, is awesome and fighting him does not disappoint. He is extremely aggressive and has the ability, unlike other bosses, to cancel his ground combos into other moves. In order to safely take him down by yourself, it is important to recognize and follow through on the few windows of opportunity available for safe counter attacks.

High poise damaging weapons like the Zweihander can break him out of his abyssal charge / AoE move so he doesn't receive a damage boost. When fighting him solo, I tend to ignore this and use it as an opportunity for healing and regrouping.

Standard strategies apply here, as they do to most all bosses: If you want to beat him faster then get two friends and summon them in, or use +20 pyromancy greater combustion, or use 50 INT Crystal Soul Spears, or hell, use a 50 STR +15 Demon Great Axe 2-handed jumping attack with Power Within, the Red Tearstone Ring and Dragonhead Roar Boost. That last one only gives you about 2 seconds to do damage, but DPS is DPS.

If you want to learn his moves and try killing him yourself without too many fancy upgrades, then this video will be helpful. After all, having a higher DPS only reduces the risk of death by conserving the resource that is your health bar. Learning the bosses moves will do more for your survivability in the long run than just using a bigger stick (which can be taken literally if you happen to be using the Large Club, but I digress).
