How fitting that the final boss of Dark Souls is pretty much Gutts.
I'm very conflicted about this boss. Fighting him was super cool, and there are aspects about it that I love - at the end of the world, a slave and lowly ash fight over something that is largely inconsequential, and they have no real reason to fight in the first place. It's somewhat symbolic of Dark Souls.
On the other hand? This is the final boss of all Dark Souls. Perhaps I would've been more okay with this if we'd also fought something epic before it. Some will argue that isn't the Dark Souls way, but considering so much of DaS3 has been just giving us what they think we want (look it's Anor Londo!) would that have been so bad?
It's not so much the fact that this is the final boss, it's what happens before and after. I wanted some closure. SOMETHING to do with the primordial serpents, Aldia, someone entirely new, I dunno. I just want some sort of closure to this series. We don't even get a cutscene. You can, again, argue that "well dark souls isn't a movie!" but still. Scholar of the First Sin has a great ending, I would argue the best one in the Souls franchise. Old Hunters had an amazing ending that wrapped everything up rather nicely. But here? We just... stop Gael from giving the painter the dark soul. And then we give it to her. And she's like "cool bye." Although I did love the line "I have no name."
