A playthrough of Capcom's 1992 license-based action game for the NES, Disney's Darkwing Duck.

Led by Steelbeak, the crime syndicate F.O.W.L., The Fiendish Organization for World Larceny, has struck once again! A group of supervillains has descended upon the city of St. Canard, and you know what that means...

"I am the terror that flaps in the night. I am the winged scourge that pecks at your nightmares. I am Darkwing Duck!"

Darkwing Duck was one of Capcom's beloved Disney-based NES games, and despite being released in the summer of 1992 as the Super Nintendo was beginning to pick up steam, it was quite popular. It received extremely favorable reviews in the popular gaming magazines, and it took the cover of the May 1992 issue of Nintendo Power, which is all the more impressive when you consider that Contra III was covered in the same issue!

The game is a Mega Man-style run-and-gun platformer. Darkwing carries a gas gun that can be outfitted with adapters: the heavy gas travels along the ground in both directions, the thunder gas sends bolts of electricity flying at 45 degree angles, and the arrow gas can create platforms to provide access to hard-to-reach areas. But unlike the Blue Bomber, Darkwing can also block enemy fire by raising his cape as a shield, and he can grab on to ledges and background fixtures to give him an extra boost in maneuverability. Though it's similar to Mega Man in several ways, the fresh coat of paint and new abilities make Darkwing Duck feel distinctly like its own game instead of a clone.

The controls are smooth, the challenge is stiff without being overwhelming, the moody graphics are excellent, and the soundtrack is loaded with jazzy earworms that'll keep you tapping your toe the entire time. Darkwing Duck is a quality game, and it was one of the best NES releases to hit stores in 1992.

Let's get dangerous!
