Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is the first game of an occult-themed trilogy of Sierra point-and-click graphic adventures, and it was the first Sierra production to be headed by Jane Jensen, a writer (and later, novelist) who had worked on King's Quest IV, Police Quest III, and EcoQuest before co-designing King's Quest VI with Roberta Williams.

Though it wasn't a smashing sales success, it was immediately hailed as a modern day classic. It won a heap of 1994 PC Game of the Year awards, and it went on to sit at the top of UK PC Gamer's list of best PC games of all time for several years. It's a genre cornerstone, and it's arguably the best game ever released by Sierra.

The game was marketed as "a supernatural psycho-thriller" and "a neo-Gothic computer novel," and both labels are apt. The razor-sharp writing effortlessly weaves the plot's fiction into an impressively researched history of New Orleans' voodoo culture, and the character and world building is top notch. It's gripping stuff.

GK isn't just a great read, though. The puzzles tend to flow organically from the events of the story, and they put up a stiff challenge without feeling unfair *if* you've been diligent in your investigating and have paid close attention to the clues.

And then there's the presentation. The handpainted backgrounds, the rotoscoped sprite animations, and the character portraits look amazing, the epic soundtrack by Robert Holmes is one of my all-time favorites in a video game (and sounds great in both FM and midi), and holy hell, did you see the voice cast list? Tim Curry, Mark Hamill, Leah Remini, Michael Dorn, Jim Cummings... that's an impressive line-up, especially for a game released in the early 90s. (Remember the voice acting in King's Quest V?)

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is everything you could ask for from a narrative-driven game. It's intelligently written, beautifully produced, and it's eminently respectful of its subject matter and its audience.

If you're looking for something to tickle your grey matter on Halloween, check it out!

(And don't worry, there's plenty of blood, too.)
