After recently uploading a video about the Dreamcast tech demo of Scud Race running on the PC (which you can see here: https://youtu.be/wriw0CyHUwg) the topic of Daytona USA 2001 for the Dreamcast came up a few times again.

This got me a bit nostalgic to see the game running again. Not that long ago I uploaded some videos of the new tracks from the game

running in mirrored reversed mode, so I decided to do the same here with the tracks lifted from Championship Circuit Edition from the Saturn. Mirrored reverse actually swaps around the blue sky/sunset course defaults and gives you remixed backing music, which is pretty cool (although TBH, I couldn't really tell any difference in the National Speedway music than it's regular BGM). I also a played a little 777 Speedway in mirror reverse too. These little changes in the way the tracks look and sound does really help to make the mirror reverse stage almost feel like brand new tracks (Mermaid Lake in particular looks and feels totally different like this). Considering how visually enhanced the Dreamcast version of Desert City is compared to it's Saturn older brother, it's a little bit disappointing that the huge roller coaster from the Saturn CCE version of National Park didn't make it into 2001.

I'm using Flycast emulator here, which very nicely upscales the Dreamcast graphics and adds in widescreen, but does have a few graphical bugs, that seem to make parts of the cars logos disappear. I'd played both of these two CCE stages the day before in reverse mode without the mirror option and got first place without too much trouble. For some weird reason, I was finding the rubber banding on the lead AI cars a lot harder the day after on Desert City in mirror reverse, it was like if I couldn't get in front of them on the opening lap, I'd spend the next 3 laps trailing them and not quite managing to overtake.

I was just using an Xbox 360 pad on the game's default sensitivity option for these videos, rather than my racing wheel. Just playing with a 360 pad the game doesn't handle too badly at all, nowhere near as bad as I remember it playing with an actual DC pad. Using the Hornet the pad sensitivity still feels quite high. It was still quite easy to start fishtailing and oversteering, especially on 777 Speedway as you're trying to steer around the CPU cars. The Falcon and the Red Cat were much less slippy and easy to control with the pad though. I think maybe the DC thumbstick just isn't all that great when it comes to this game, as I think it's got quite a small amount of movement on it's X axis comparatively compared to the superior Xbox 360 pad.
