The Drill Ride of Death
Your objective is to ride 'shotgun' on top while Ellie works the drill to punch your way into the Earth Gov complex. This ride is no cakewalk if you have no plan of action as you'll be assaulted by an assortment of Slashers and Pukers climbing over the sides of the drill as well as a hellacious collection of Lurkers firing projectiles down on you from the rocky cliffs on either side.
There are four distinct spawns:
1. Three Slashers/Pukers boarding the drill
2. Lurkers on the right cliffs while more Slashers board the drill
3. Six Slashers/Pukers boarding the drill
4. Lurkers on the left cliffs while more Slashers board the drill
For the first Slasher/Puker spawn, the number is consistent, i.e., it's always three enemies, but the spawn types, spawn order and spawn points are random (you could actually get three Pukers, the worst case scenario).
Your best bet is to simply place yourself in the center of the platform near the front roll grinder facing towards the back. Alternate between watching either side and when the first enemy starts climbing over, immediately put it in stasis and then drop a timed mine at its feet. Then quickly equip the Ripper and use it to kill whatever climbs over on the opposite side.
The second spawn will be a batch of Lurkers on the cliffs on the right side. But before they appear, make sure you use TK to grab a whole bunch of loot on the ledges on the right side as well as three explosive canisters. You can then launch the
canisters at the Lurkers to get some easy kills. Wait for them to extend their tentacles and then launch the canisters at their tentacles for the best results. When you've exhausted all the canisters, run to the left side of the drill in the back corner and continue fighting off the Lurkers there by shooting their tentacles with the Line Gun's Primary Fire. A Slasher will also eventually climb over the right side which you can kill with Line Gun as well.
The third spawn is marked by Ellie's warning, "Hang on. We're coming up on more of that stuff..." At this point, you're going to have to get down with your bad self and do some quick running and gunning. Reload your Line Gun and then go
immediately to the center back of the drill near the cab and watch either side of the drill furtively. As soon as any enemy begins climbing over, put it in stasis and then kill it with the Line Gun's Primary Fire. Do not waver from this procedure and you'll do fine. Hit the Slashers around the knees and hit the Pukers about waist level.
Remember to refill your stasis after four shots. Typically, after the fifth kill, Ellie will say, "You okay up there?". As soon as she says this, run to plant yourself in the back right corner of the drill right next to Ellie's cab. After the sixth kill you're done with this spawn.
The fourth spawn is a batch of Lurkers on the left cliffs accompanied by some Slashers climbing over the left side. If you managed to plant yourself in a 'blind spot' in the back right corner of the drill before the Lurkers appear, all of the Lurker's projectiles will completely miss you. Then use the Line Gun's Primary Fire to focus mainly on the Slashers which will all board on the left side. Only shoot the Lurkers when you have a spare moment but don't worry too much about them. Shoot the Slashers at waist level or below and shoot the Lurkers across their tentacles to get instant kills. If you have time, extract some claws from the dead Slashers and use those to spear other Slashers or even Lurkers up on the cliffs (if you fancy yourself a sure shot)...
