Dead Space Retrospective: Hits and Misses
Shep investigates the many facets of Dead Space within the first retrospection of 2023, just before the Dead Space remake comes out!
Dead Space arrived in the wake of Resident Evil 4's survival horror revolution. It combined the latter's camera view and combat heavy focus while stuffing it with legitimate horror scares, especially the psychological type. Looking at this retrospection highlights other amazing features of Dead Space, like Kinesis and Stasis tools, and a very complex and engaging 'dismemberment' combat system that forced players to have patience and accuracy while in a high anxiety horror environment.
This retrospection doesn't stop with the positives though. Dead Space also struggled with pacing, needing some backtracking done for ridiculous tasks, including making a poison for a boss, which you then have to fight anyway! Speaking of bosses and enemies in general, Dead Space struggled mightily to make enough variety, with recycled slasher forms and bosses that were too few and far between to really invoke an even more stressful feeling of fear.
