There was apparently some rumours floating around about Dead Space in that it is possible to soft lock the game and not progress. Specifically, towards the end of Chapter 9, there is a battery that's supposed to spawn right before a locked door. When it spawns, you pick up the battery, put it into the lock, and continue on.

The problem is that, for some gamers (this is apparently a rare thing to happen judging by what I was able to find), the battery doesn't spawn, causing the game to soft lock.

The steps I took to try and fix this was to purposely die on one of the flames and restart from a previous checkpoint. The problem persisted, though.

I also reloaded from a previous save, but the problem still persisted.

So, on my third attempt, I decided to record this and, as you can tell from the video, the problem persisted.

So, if there was any doubts that this problem existed, hopefully this video lays those doubts to rest. It is possible that this can happen.

This was played on an unmodified Playstation 3 with a legitimate disc in case anyone was wondering.

All I can recommend is making an additional save before entering Chapter 9 and maybe you can reload from that save and get the game to spawn the battery, but I can't offer any certainties on that. I just wanted there to be video documentation of this problem for referencing purposes.
