Deadpool - NES (2019) (hack)
For as much effort was put into this, I gotta say, it's not really my thing. I'm not a big fan. It really is a complete overhaul and I do applaud pretty much everything done to make this feel like Deadpool. It's a perfect match, too, with the Ninja Gaiden game it was hacked into. Fourth wall, swearing, and even the regenerating health that's almost always missed by the big studios when it comes to heroes like Deadpool and Wolverine...it's all here.
What I don't like about it is half my fault that can be overcome, but the other half may take some extra work that wouldn't be worth putting into a revision of a complete project.
The half I can overcome is the total overhaul it does to Ninja Gaiden. It's all unfamiliar and the weapons are very cool, but don't feel natural. It feels like I have more at my disposal and that sort of takes away from the tightness of Ninja Gaiden where it was you and whatever ninja magic you have. The ability to select your ability is awesome, but it's another thing to think about. The abilities themselves don't feel familiar either. All of that just takes practice.
The half I don't like myself, though, is that the game feels crowded. All of the tile work done is VERY impressive, but it takes away a lot of the clarity that the original was known for. I'm not always sure what's an item block, what's a platform, what is a path, etc. The color schemes used don't create enough of a contrast where I feel it's needed.
I also have a difficult time when some people take control of Deadpool. His attitude is renowned, but in the wrong hands it can feel juvenile. I don't actually think the writers did anything wrong here, but I didn't feel that this was true Deadpool. That's OK, though. It's just a game and the fact that there's even a narrative is good enough.
Really, I'm nitpicking on everything except the coloring and stage design. The stage design is even a strength as well as a weakness. The stages are designed well and the attention to annoying difficulty in certain areas was spot on. Boss battles are even bigger and better, which is really cool to see.
So my opinion is that is needs work, but that's just one opinion of many I have. Most of them are positive and this is worth checking out.
