2“Leaving and Waving” is a portrait series by photographer Deanna Dikeman that documents her parents’ farewells as they leave their home in Sioux City, Iowa. The series spans over nearly three decades and captures the quiet tradition and loyalty of her parents’ departures. The photographs show her parents in various seasons, receding into the garage on rainy evenings, blowing kisses from the driveway, and standing behind snowbanks. The series also reflects the parallel progress of Dikeman’s own life, including the visible aging of her parents, the presence of her old dog, and the growth of her son from baby to grown adult. The photographs in “Leaving and Waving” create a family album that compresses a lifetime of memories into a poignant and affecting chronology.
