Presenting our DeathSquared project with SMG Studios. I was tasked with building an Xbox One S and PS4 Slim into 2 of the games characters of which were affectionately named Steve (red) and Barry (blue). The result is before your eyes completed and featured at PAX South and RTX Sydney! These custom console enclosures were built from the ground up in just a few short weeks. Stay tuned for the game which releases March 14th on all platforms!
The Cubes are built around a wooden frame with layered MDF panelling to create the sides. Each unit has a shelf in the middle for rigidity and to allow 4 controllers to be stored in the upper level with the console being fastened in the lower. The eyes were made with vacuum formed plastic and acrylic was used as the diffusers for all the LED lighting. The LED lights connect back to a single power source so that they can all be controlled with one switch. All the small pieces were hand crafted out of assorted materials such as MDF and acrylic and finished off with an acrylic paint job.
Scale was the biggest issue with this build, ensuring that all of the smaller pieces didn’t look out of place without looking too large or disappearing into the build. The Eyes were by far the hardest part to actually construct though with the inner and outer walls along with needing to house the eyelids as well. Was a very finicky process!!
The Playstation 4 provided some difficulty with mounting as the power button isn’t straight on so it had to be removed and a custom mount was built to house it on the front panel of Barry.
