Decimals Introduction
---------------------------------------------------------------------

A decimal is any number that contains a decimal point and a value before or after it. For example, these are decimals: 0.461.7213.7432Any whole number can be written as a decimal by adding ".0" to the end: 5 = 5.0. It is technically not a whole number any more, although it does have the same value as before. In decimals, the number immediately following the decimal point represents how many tenths are added to the whole number preceding it. "1.5" is the same as saying "one and five tenths," or "1 and 5/10." Similarly, ".7" equals "7/10."Numbers with two numbers after the decimal point, such as 1.25, are expressing how many hundredths are added to the preceding whole number. So 1.25 equals "1 and 25/100."Decimals are related to powers of ten, fractions and percentages and are useful for the numbering system. The next series of videos will teach you more about how to use decimals.
