The unreleased US NTSC version of Deep Fear running at 60 FPS on the Sega Saturn Emulator SSF_TestVer_(2017-07-02)

A small capsule from outer space has landed in the pacific ocean near the underwater research facility called The Big Table. The Navies small but fast nuclear submarine Sea Fox is immediately dispatched to retrieve the capsule from the bottom of the ocean and bring it to the Big Table for further research. Suddenly all communication with the submarine is lost when it crashes into the Navy Area of the Big Table and its up to John Mayor from the ERS to find out what happened to the crew of the Sea Fox and uncover the truth about its mysterious cargo.

Welcome to my complete playthrough of Deep Fear (1998), the forgotten Sega Saturn exclusive. This game was Segas answer to Capcoms and Shinji Mikamis masterpiece Resident Evil (1996) and includes a more cinematic focused storyline and other cool gameplay mechanics for its time, such as running while shooting (yes that was considered revolutionary back then lol) and applying items to a button.
Anyway as a longtime survival horror fan and huge Resident Evil fan I overlooked this game for quite a while, another reason this game got under the radar is that it was only released in japan and europe. This game was actually the very last to be released game for the dying Sega Saturn in europe and is therefor very expensive to track down today (at least the PAL version) for the reasons above.
This version I am playing is actually the unreleased NTSC-US version of Deep Fear which was never released in the US and was included later in a compilation called Lost & Found Volume 3.
It is of course competely in english and also runs at 60 FPS, since it was impossible for me to track down a working PAL version I will play both discs on the SSF Sega Emulator 012 Beta R3 which works almost flawless with the game, aside from some minor audio issues.
After playing through the whole game twice I was actually quite impressed with the story and its characters and especially the ending caught me off guard with its twist. It has something going for it and in some regards even outclasses Resident Evil.
The whole concept of being trapped under water in an isolated area with those crazy monsters running rampant is a homage to the movies like Leviathan and the Abyss, also the soundtrack in this game is one of the best sundtracks I have ever heard in a survival horror game, no wonder because it was done by Kenji Kawai himself who did the soundtrack for a lot of anime like Ghost in the Shell and movies like Ringu and Dark Water.
True classic don't pass on this long forgotten gem if you are a retro hardcore survival horror fan ^^

Cheers and enjoy ^^/
