Delivering High Quality Multimedia Solutions During the Pandemic | GDC 2021 | Intel Software
0Fluendo and Intel partnered to develop new multi-media solution based on Intel Deep Link technology. Two companies cooperated to deliver value to end-users.
We are Fluendo. For the last 15 years, we are developing solutions for video encoding and decoding for a wide range of devices: from SoC, set-top boxes, Smart TVs, Thin Clients, In-vehicles, and personal computers.
Our developments are always focused on high-quality solution and therefore have to constantly test our software on the latest hardware solutions. Our Barcelona offices we have built a laboratory composed of HBBTV modulators and receptors using our latest software technology. Thanks to this installation, developers and testers can immediately validate the result of their work on the same hardware as the end-consumer.
In 2020, the pandemic situation have forced our teams to start working remotely. We faced a complex issue as we couldn't deploy a laboratory in everybody's home to allow continuous testing. To allow our developers and testers to keep on testing continuously, we needed a very-low latency streaming solution with simple client access through a web browser and parallel encoding of multiple 4K videos with audio. As experts in multimedia streaming, we decided to build our own solution.
Using Fluendo codecs and knowledge, we have built a streaming solution around WebRTC protocol to comply with very low latency and easy access. Still, with common PC hardware, we rapidly encountered limitations to encode more than a few 4K streams in parallel. This was when our partnership with Intel came out with a new solution using the new Intel Deep Link Technology and Intel Iris Xe graphics. Thanks to this solution, we can now encode more than 12 simultaneous 4K streams in parallel. Our web application is able to connect directly to those streams, users can remotely manage them, associating the laboratory audio and video sources to any stream.
Our developers and testers can now view the result of their work in realtime as if they were physically present in our offices. They can also consult encoding statistics to monitor the streaming server load from Linux, Mac, or Windows. Thanks to our codecs technology and Intel Deep Link technology hardware, we've been able to adapt to the new worldwide situation in no-time and keep on working normally with the same efficiency as before.
