Seeing as I'm already a firm believer in stereoscopic 3D for games (as a result of owning NVIDIA's 3D Vision hardware), it logically follows that I just *had* to get myself one of those fancy Oculus Rift dev kits which seem to be all the rage these days. Uncharacteristically for me, this was not one of those seemingly random Kickstarters I have thrown money at with reckless abandon, so I had to order my new peripheral the old-fashioned way from the official website. And after a few weeks of impatient waiting, the package arrived via UPS today.

I still have settings to tweak and plenty of games and tech demos to try out, but my first impressions are that this is some neat stuff, alright...but mostly for people who haven't already experienced high resolution stereoscopy through something like the aforementioned 3D Vision. Sure, the Rift's headtracking combined with the simple fact that the gadget immersively eats up (most) of your real-life field of view are certainly welcome additions to the experience, but so far I definitely prefer the much stronger depth effect of the 3D Vision 2 and its full 1920*1080 output which is available right from the get-go.

That said, especially in a long-term perspective it's already become difficult to envision a future of gaming which *doesn't* include something like the Oculus Rift. At least in that sense, Palmer Luckey and his talented team have certainly made a big difference even well ahead of the official release of their product.
