Another dev team fell victim to my constant nagging[1] about head tracking support. Egosoft just implemented to my utter delight the well known UDP protocol used e.g. by Opentrack to their native Linux PC version of X4: Foundations and kindly provided me with a private beta version to test it out. The game did have head tracking support before but only proprietary solutions were offered, which means that Linux users usually have to make use of Proton or Wine to get head tracking features working in games. Implementing this via UDP also allows the usage of more generic software or hardware on any operating system, like for example tracking data from a smartphone [strapped e.g. to headphones], since data may now come from a dedicated system or even other head tracker software!

It's great to see another company embracing open standards and care that much for their niche gamers on Linux ❀ ️ I'm well aware that I'm niche of the niche here with my head tracker and on Linux.

[1] My first dive into getting head tracking to work in X4 was in 2021https://beko.famkos.net/2021/05/03/head-tracking-for-x4-foundations-on-linux/..) and I even managed to sideload my own socket, which can be seen in action on my cockpit panel, but sadly the viewport of the player camera can not be accessed from Lua. Ever since I figured out that I can't "fix" this with a mod I started bugging the devs on occasion on the Discord and today my wish came true 🀘 πŸ€“
