In an age when the public can be so easily manipulated and misled, can we be sure that the people know best?
We all believe in democracy – even Vladimir Putin and Bashar al-Assad claim to abide by majority voting. But in an age when the public can be so easily manipulated and misled, can we be sure that the people know best? Should we constrain democracy and hand ever more authority to experts? Or do we, like Brexit and Donald Trump supporters hoped, need more direct democracy, and for our representatives to be messengers of the people? And finally, how does social media and cybercrime transform democracies?
