Demon's Crest (100%/ All Endings) Part 1
This game is horrible and great all at the same time. It does so many amazing and great things, but it is heavily mired by some questionable boss design. The game starts out on a pretty high note with a super cool fight against a hulking dragon and the game doesn't let up from there. The levels are seemingly straight forward and linear, but each area seems to contain at least one hidden route that takes you to a new level with a new boss. There are a ton of secrets in every level and there are hidden secrets everywhere. It really satiates my lust for exploration. The graphics are freaking great and the levels are super colorful and full of neat effects. One level is a forest on fire and if you die at the boss the trees are then consumed by the flames and gone so you can see hidden secrets behind them. It's pretty cool. There is an overworld in this one as well and you get to explore it in the very cool Mode7 and fly around. The downside is that there are some hidden places and entering levels can be a bit of a pain. I beat the game pretty quickly, but that was just the beginning (and the bad ending). There are like 4 endings to this game depending on how much you have done. The bad here though are the bosses. There was one boss in the snowy area, some sort of murder dog, Grewon, that absolutely destroyed me. It felt super cheap until I found a way to cheese it. Most bosses have some sort of weakness to your gargoyle forms, which you can eventually have 5 of. It's not always obvious how much damage you are doing since there are no health bars. The final few bosses are truly awful though. They look neat and their sprites are huge, but that's the problem. They are so big they don't fit on the screen so most of the time you are trying to dodge attacks that are coming from off screen and there are usually a ton of projectiles and laser beams flying at you from all directions. It makes for a not fun experience and it genuinely feels more like luck than skill and hoping RNG treats you well enough to win. Sure, the game has some challenge, but it's not the kind of challenge that I find fun. I don't think the bosses ruin the fun of the game but they do keep an otherwise awesome game from being truly amazing. I loved hunting down the secrets and finding the hidden levels and most of the levels are pretty fun to get through. Finding what gargoyle is appropriate for what situation is very Mega Man and I love that. This game is a good time, I just wish the bosses were thought through a bit better. Enjoy my blind playthrough.
