I really didn’t expect to like this game as much as I did. The gameplay is solid and feels pretty smooth for how relatively slow it is and having limited directional dodging similar to Dark Souls 1. The bosses aren’t anything too special and I especially disliked Flamelurker and Dragon God, but the rest were fine. I have some gripes with the false Allant’s combo speed but he’s not that bad. What really blew me away was the world design and atmosphere despite each area being very small. Boletaria and Latria Prison were my favorite looking areas, Latria Prison especially has a really good horror vibe that I like even more than Bloodborne’s. My biggest complaints about the game are deaths and of course World Tendancy. Having your max health cut in half while having a ring to “fix” it is pretty frustrating and I think it’s excessively punishing because you’re playing the game with only one free ring slot. Then World Tendency comes along and makes it worse, making enemies stronger and even spawning extra red phantom variants of enemies that have inflated health. I over-leveled for this playthrough and I was still getting consistently two-shot by some common enemies because of World Tendency. It made what should’ve been an easy game very hard for all the wrong reasons. I’m sure on a repeat playthrough I would die a lot less and it would be less of a problem, but it certainly left its mark on my first playthrough. Overall this is a great game and one that I’ll definitely return to, either casually or maybe I’ll try Soul Level 1. I’ll also play the original at some point as well but I’ll have to emulate it.
