I made a poor assumption upon fighting Chaos in the last episode in that I was dealing with the critical hit variant of Chaos as in my previous encounter with Boss he was utilizing the Generator Overload as opposed to Refined Lenses to enhance the lance's range.
There is a big difference in how you need to approach both upgrades, but in the end it is a learning experience, and I look forward to having more battles like that in the future.
