Dev Mode isn't Going Anywhere and Retail RetroArch without a Whitlelist is a Thing Now
Old story, but lessons learned are relevant.
Early in January of 2022, news broke out of some users getting their Microsoft Developer accounts suspended for inactivity. Dev Mode on the Xbox Series X | S is the most viable way to emulate games by providing players a contained, separate section of their console. With the wave of deactivations, many feared the end of console emulation on their Series machines. The popular YouTuber, Modern Vintage Gamer, made a video about this, and the story was quickly picked up by other gaming news outlets, causing a bit of panic. Well, turns out it WASN'T Microsoft being aware of the functions of their machines. Turns out it was Microsoft being completely unaware of their own. This video goes over the whole Dev Mode scare.
In this time, I also looked at the possibility of running emulators on the retail version of the Xbox; a practice far riskier than flying across the Bermuda Triangle. The process was only achievable through the means of a "under the table" download procedure involving a whitelist. That is no longer the case and downloading apps like RetroArch, Duckstation, and other emulators is easier than ever. I'll show you how in this video.
