Cabin is a “background map.” TF2 and other source engine games have the ability to load small for-show maps in the main menu’s background when the game starts. TF2 doesn’t use this ability but could. It even has a map already called “background01” that does this task but isn’t enabled by default. Cabin is a map made to be used as a main menu background.

Cabin is a single-room map designed to look amazing and run well. It’s full of detail above and behind what a normal map would have. There’s high quality cubemaps, piratical effects of dusty flying by, soft and harsh lighting effects and even some volumetric light. A lot of emphasis is put on lighting and shadows. The camera slowly rotates around the point in the center of the map.

The download includes 2 maps. background_cabin_v1 and background_cabin_noclass_v1. The no class version has no classes standing on the control point. This is so people can choose witch-ever version they prefer. Also it’s because the eyes on prop-classes sometimes glitch-out and show no pupil and thus look freaky. It depending on how someone has TF2 set-up. The version with classes has logic to randomize the classes that spawn in. Every time the map is loaded 3 random tf2 classes will spawn in.

Thematically the map takes place in a log cabin that’s floor, walls and ceiling have broken to reveal a spytech facility underneath. There’s a hatch where workers would usually enter and outside there’s a secret hatch for vehicles to enter. The map depicts a story of a cabin acting as a façade.
